Herod was the one who had John arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married. John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” Herodias harbored a grudge against him and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so. Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and kept him in custody. When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him. Mark 6, 17-20

When the time of David’s death drew near, he gave these instructions to Solomon his son: “I am going the way of all the earth. Be strong and be a man! Keep the mandate of the LORD, your God, walking in his ways and keeping his statutes, commands, ordinances, and decrees as they are written in the law of Moses, that you may succeed in whatever you do, and wherever you turn, and that the LORD may fulfill the word he spoke concerning me: If your sons so conduct themselves that they walk before me in faithfulness with their whole heart and soul, there shall never be wanting someone of your line on the throne of Israel. 1 Kings 2:1-4

Dawid zwrócił się do Pana: «Bardzo zgrzeszyłem tym, czego dokonałem, lecz teraz, o Panie, daruj łaskawie winę swego sługi, bo postąpiłem bardzo nierozsądnie». Gdy Dawid wstał nazajutrz rano, słowo Pańskie następującej treści zostało skierowane do proroka Gada, „Widzącego” Dawidowego: «Idź i oświadcz Dawidowi: Tak mówi Pan: Przedstawiam ci trzy możliwości. Wybierz sobie jedną z nich, a Ja ci to uczynię». Gad udał się do Dawida i przekazał mu następujące oświadczenie: «Czy chcesz, by w twej ziemi nastało siedem lat głodu, czy wolisz przez trzy miesiące uciekać przed wrogiem, który cię będzie ścigał, czy też przyjść ma na twój kraj zaraza trwająca trzy dni? Pomyśl i rozpatrz, co mam odpowiedzieć Temu, który mnie posłał». Dawid odpowiedział Gadowi: «Jestem w wielkiej rozterce. Wpadnijmy raczej w ręce Pana, bo wielkie jest Jego miłosierdzie, ale w ręce człowieka niech nie wpadnę!» 2 Sm 24, 10-14
Hope of all hearts
Afterward, however, David regretted having numbered the people. David said to the LORD: “I have sinned grievously in what I have done. Take away, LORD, your servant’s guilt, for I have acted very foolishly.” When David rose in the morning, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Gad, David’s seer, saying: Go, tell David: Thus says the LORD: I am offering you three options; choose one of them, and I will give you that. Gad then went to David to inform him. He asked: “Should three years of famine come upon your land; or three months of fleeing from your enemy while he pursues you; or is it to be three days of plague in your land? Now consider well: what answer am I to give to him who sent me?” David answered Gad: “I am greatly distressed. But let us fall into the hand of God, whose mercy is great, rather than into human hands.” 2 Samuel 24: 10-14
